NYC police probe arrest of ex-tennis pro James Blake

NEW YORK (AP) The New York Police Department says an officer's been placed on modified assignment after former tennis professional James Blake claimed he was thrown to the ground by officers while mistakenly being arrested.

Authorities say the action was taken after internal affairs investigators viewed surveillance video of the incident outside a Manhattan hotel.

A police spokesman said Wednesday Blake was misidentified during an investigation into fraudulently purchased cellphones. A witness believed he'd sold phones to Blake on Tuesday. He hadn't.

Blake is biracial. He told the Daily News of New York he didn't know if he was arrested because of his race. But he did say the first officer he encountered used inappropriate force.

Blake was released after officers determined his identity. Another man was taken into custody.

An investigation continues.
