April Ross teams with 3rd partner for record win

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) April Ross became the first female player in AVP tour history to win titles with three partners in the same season, teaming with Lauren Fendrick to take the Kingston AVP Championships at Huntington Beach.

Ross and Fendrick beat Nicole Branagh and Jenny Kropp 21-19, 23-21 in the final.

Ross won the season-opening New Orleans Open with three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, then took the Seattle Open and Manhattan Beach Open in August with Jennifer Fopma after Walsh Jennings was sidelined by a shoulder injury.

Ross won four of the five AVP tournaments she entered this season and has won 11 of the 12 AVP events she has played over the last two seasons. The victory Sunday was her 22nd overall, and Fendrick's first.

Ross and Fendrick reached the final with a 21-15, 21-15 victory over Brittany Hochevar and Misty May-Treanor, the three-time Olympic gold medalist who retired after the 2012 London games. May-Treanor played in one other AVP event this season, also reaching the semifinals at the AVP Seattle Open.

In the men's final, John Hyden and Tri Bourne beat Ryan Doherty and John Mayer 21-17, 23-25, 15-13 for their second tournament victory in two weeks. Hyden has 11 victories, and Bourne three.
