Olympic hammer thrower Maria Bespalova tests positive

MOSCOW (AP) The IAAF says Olympic hammer thrower Maria Bespalova of Russia has been suspended after testing positive for a banned steroid once used in the East German state doping program.

The IAAF tells The Associated Press in an e-mailed statement that Bespalova tested positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone last month at the Istaf meeting in Berlin.

Bespalova has been provisionally suspended until the Russian athletics federation rules whether she should face a ban.

Bespalova reached the hammer throw final at the 2012 Olympics but finished 11th. Russian teammate Tatyana Lysenko won gold.
