Cumberland changes nickname from Bulldogs to Phoenix

LEBANON, Tenn. (AP) Cumberland University is changing its nickname from the Bulldogs to the Phoenix.

The NAIA school announced the change Monday. Cumberland athletic department spokesman Jo Jo Freeman said the move takes effect immediately.

In a release announcing the move, Cumberland noted that a phoenix already appeared on the school's official seal and was included in the stained glass of the university's Baird Chapel. The school's alumni magazine also is called The Phoenix Rising.

The school also introduced a new logo Monday that features the mythological bird.

Cumberland is a member of the Mid-South Conference.
