CHICAGO (AP) John Belmonte learned of winning his third straight PBA Player of the Year award while awaiting the birth of his third child.
The Professional Bowlers Association announced the winners on live video streaming Wednesday, but Belmonte was in a hospital with his wife in his hometown of Orange, New South Wales, Australia.
''I wasn't watching. I was with Kimberly when I heard my phone blow up with a lot of messages,'' Belmonte said. ''I knew it was either really good news or really bad. I saw it was great news and immediately thought it would be the second-best news of the day.''
Daughter Sylvie arrived minutes later.
The 32-year-old Belmonte, a two-handed bowler, is scheduled to compete Feb. 2 in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
