USA Volleyball CEO Doug Beal to retire after 2016

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) USA Volleyball chief executive officer Doug Beal says he will retire after 2016.

Beal has been affiliated with the national governing body for 46 years as a national team player, coach, administrator and executive. He became the CEO of USA Volleyball in 2005.

Under Beal, the federation became the national governing body for sitting volleyball, a Paralympic event, and established a separate department for beach volleyball.

Beal competed on the national team from 1970-76 and became its head coach in 1977, leading Team USA to its first Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles in 1984.

His retirement will be effective Jan. 2, 2017. The federation says it will begin a search so it can have a successor in place shortly after the Rio Olympics.
