Cheserek wins 10,000-meter title at the NCAA championships
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) Edward Cheserek found another gear and added to his large championship collection.
The Oregon junior's signature kick on the final lap of the men's 10,000 meters Wednesday night helped him to his 14th NCAA title.
Cheserek picked up the pace with about 250 meters to go to pull away from five other runners and win the 6.2-mile race in 29 minutes, 9.57 seconds.
Northern Arizona's Futsum Zienasellassie was second in 29:10.68.
It was Cheserek's third straight national title at that distance. He'll go for two in a row in the 5,000 on Friday.
Cheserek's win got 10 team points for Oregon, the two-time defending national champion.
Jarrion Lawson of Arkansas completed his big day by winning the long jump at 26 feet, 9 inches. He moved from sixth place to the lead with his fourth-round jump of 26-8 1/4 then improved on that mark on his next attempt to give him the two best marks of the competition.
Earlier in the day, he helped the Razorbacks to the top qualifying time in the 4x100 preliminaries in 38.71. He later won his 100 heat and also qualified in the 200.
Oklahoma State's Nick Miller won the hammer at 242-8. Cornell's Rudy Winkler was second at 239-0.
Miller, second in the event in 2014, grabbed the lead from Winkler on his fifth of six throws with a toss of 241-6 then improved on that in the final round.
Tennessee's Jake Blankenship completed his comeback from a groin injury late in the indoor season in March to win the pole vault with a clearance of 18 feet, 4 1/2 inches.
Torben Laidig of Virginia Tech was second at 18-2 1/2.
Mississippi State's Curtis Thompson defeated three other athletes who had not lost this season to win the javelin at 254-9.
Virginia's Filip Mihaljevic won the shot put at 67-11 1/2. He took the lead on his fourth of six throws.
Wisconsin's Zach Ziemek has 4,338 points and leads after the first five events of the decathlon, which concludes Thursday.
The remaining men's finals will be held Friday, while the women's finals are Thursday and Saturday.
