CAS confirms 4-year ban for doping by Russian weightlifter

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) Russian weightlifter Alexei Lovchev has failed in an appeal against a four-year doping ban ahead of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport says its judging panel issued an urgent ruling to uphold the ban imposed by the International Weightlifting Federation in May.

The verdict confirms Lovchev is stripped of a world championship gold medal and world record set last year.

The court says Lovchev tested positive for the banned substance ipamorelin, a ''growth hormone releasing peptide.''

The 27-year-old Russian had set a world record total lift when winning a gold medal in the over-105 kilogram (231 pounds) class at the 2015 world championships in Houston, Texas.
