Brazil suspended from basketball for post-Olympic disarray

MIES, Switzerland (AP) Basketball's world governing body has suspended Brazil's national federation for failing to finance and organize the sport.

FIBA says its executive board ''expressed its regret for the situation of basketball in Brazil just a few months after the Olympic Games.''

FIBA is calling on the Brazilian federation to work with a recently appointed task force ''in order to overcome the serious institutional, sporting and financial difficulties.''

Brazil has failed to finance its own basketball operations, missed international competitions, canceled national youth championships and did not organize a 3x3 World Tour event in Rio de Janeiro, FIBA says.

Players suffered as ''they have missed the opportunity to qualify and play internationally in the upcoming years.''

FIBA says its ruling board will re-evaluate Brazil's situation in January.
