Alinghi wins extreme sailing series

SYDNEY (AP) Swiss team Alinghi clinched the Extreme Sailing series on the final day of competition on Sydney Harbour on Sunday, with skipper Arnaud Psarofaghis holding off a late attempt from archrivals Oman Air to win the title.

It was the third time Alinghi has won the Extreme Sailing series following victories in 2008 and 2014, but the first time they've done it aboard the speedy GC32 catamarans.

Alinghi started the final day with a 19-point lead on Oman Air. Alinghi's victory was only guaranteed following the 24th and penultimate race of the series, its fourth place ahead of Oman Air in fifth finally giving it the series edge.
