Florida will likely start its third quarterback of the season on the road against No. 10 South Carolina on Saturday. On his weekly radio show on Thursday, Gators coach Will Muschamp said redshirt freshman Skyler Mornhinweg is on track to start at quarterback against the Gamecocks, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
Muschamp said Tyler Murphy has not practiced this week thanks to a nagging shoulder injury, and while the coach wouldn't rule out Murphy's return, he said the coaches are moving forward with the assumption that Mornhinweg will start.
"We feel good about him moving forward and being ready to go," Muschamp said of Mornhinweg. "That's the way it's looking now."
Muschamp reiterated that the team's starter will be a game-time decision, and Murphy's availability depends on his performance in Friday's workouts.
"We'll see what Tyler can do tomorrow," Muschamp said Thursday night. "We're not totally certain yet."
Murphy re-injured his shoulder in last week's home loss to Vanderbilt, an injury he originally suffered against LSU on Oct. 12. He has been Florida's starter since taking over for Jeff Driskel when Driskel suffered a season-ending knee injury against Tennessee in September. A total of 10 Florida players have suffered season-ending injuries this year.
