Multiple Midwest cities bidding for 2018 Big Ten tournament

Friday September 12th, 2014

At least four cities are in the running to host the 2018 Big Ten men's basketball tournament.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said the frontrunner to host is Madison Square Garden in New York. Other potential hosts include Omaha, Minneapolis and Detroit.

"I’m thinking that if it’s not New York, we’ll put it up (for bid) and see who’s really interested,” Delany said to the Chicago Tribune. “Omaha is hungry. We’ll continue to explore the New York situation, but New York is expensive.”

The conference's tournament has been held in either Indianapolis or Chicago since its inception in 1998.

Chicago will host the tournament next year, followed by Indianapolis in 2016 and Washington, D.C., in 2017.

The Big East is scheduled to host its conference tournament at Madison Square Garden the weekend before the NCAA tournament starts, so the Big Ten would have to move its dates back a week if it elects to pursue New York as a host.
