Georgia Tech forward Charles Mitchell will be eligible to play immediately this season after transferring from Maryland earlier this year, Georgia Tech announced Tuesday.

Mitchell, who's from Marietta, Ga., just outside of Atlanta, had his waiver request to play immediately approved by the NCAA. He had left Maryland in order to be closer to his ill grandmother.

The 6-foot-8, 269-pound Mitchell 6.5 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds for the Terrapins last season. He started the team's last 10 games of the season.

Mitchell was one of five scholarship players to leave Maryland after last season, including Shaquille Cleare, Nick Faust, Roddy Peters and Seth Allen. He's also one of four players to transfer to Georgia Tech this year, joining forward Demarco Cox from Auburn, guard Josh Heath from South Florida and forward Nick Jacobs from Alabama. Cox and Heath are also eligible to play this year.

Georgia Tech went 16-17 last season and did not qualify for the NCAA tournament.
