NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Dwight Meikle scored 15 points, leading four players in double figures as Hampton defeated Tennessee State 62-54 in a defensive contest Tuesday night.

The Pirates (2-5) shot just 30 percent in the win - Meikle hit 3 of 10 shots. But Hampton made it up at the free throw line. Meikle sank 9 of 10 foul shots while the team went 24-32.

Ke'Ron Brown added 14 points, Deron Powers 11 and Quinton Chievous 10 for Hampton.

Tennessee State was held to 31.5 percent shooting and only 16 of 26 from the foul line in its fifth straight loss. The Tigers (2-6) were led by nine points apiece from Christian Mekowulu and Jay Harris - the second time this season the team didn't get a scorer into double figures.

Brown capped a breakaway 11-3 run for Hampton, up 48-41 with 5:10 left, and the Pirates scored their last 12 from the line.
