Foul shots key as Dayton beats Miami (Ohio) 66-62

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) Dyshawn Pierre and Scoochie Smith only hit one field goal between them, but sank 5 of 6 free throws in the final seconds to preserve Dayton's 66-62 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday night.

The Flyers (5-1) didn't attempt a field goal in the final 4:03 but hit 22 of 33 free throws. Miami, meantime, was raining 3-pointers - hitting 9 of 19 including the last four shots from the field - as the Redhawks (2-5) kept whittling at Dayton's late lead.

Will Sullivan and Eric Washington drained unanswered 3-pointers in the final minute, closing to 61-58. But in the final 29 seconds Pierre made 3 of 4 from the line and Smith hit two free throws. By the time Sullivan hit another 3 it was too little, too late.

Kendall Pollard led Dayton with 15 points, Devon Scott added 13 with 10 rebounds.

Willie Moore led Miami with 14 points.
