Sam Houston State gets by New Orleans 68-62

NEW ORLEANS (AP) DeMarcus Gatlin had 15 points and Michael Holyfield had 14 rebounds and six blocks as Sam Houston State extended its win streak to six, knocking off New Orleans 68-62 Saturday night.

Holyfield, Jabari Peters and Paul Baxter all had nine points for Sam Houston State (11-4, 3-0 Southland Conference).

Sam Houston held a 34-21 halftime advantage and was up 41-29 with 15:44 left. The Privateers mounted a comeback as Kevin Hill had a tip-in and Christavious Gill followed with a three-point play, and New Orleans closed to 46-37 with 11:35 left. The Bearkats opened a bigger gap but the Privateers charged back again. Hill made two free throws and had a tip-in to close to 63-58 with 1:02 left. Gatlin made four straight free throws to seal the win.

Gill and Terrance Syon had 14 points apiece, and Hill and Tevin Broyles had 11 each for New Orleans (5-6, 1-1).
