Utah Valley uses big start to top Seattle, 70-52

OREM, Utah (AP) Mitch Bruneel scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Utah State used a big first half to handle Seattle, 70-52, in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both schools Saturday night.

The defending WAC champion Wolverines (6-9, 1-0) raced to a 38-14 lead at intermission and cruised to the victory.

Bruneel was 10 of 15 from the field and 4 of 6 from distance in leading Utah State. Donte Williams added 15 points and the Wolverines shot a tepid 20 of 54 from the field, including 8 of 23 from beyond the arc, but were 22 of 28 from the free throw line and outrebounded Seattle 39-29.

Seattle (7 of 8, 0-1) shot 20 of 48 from the field (41.7 percent), but was 1 of 14 from behind the line and 11 of 15 from the free throw line. William Powell led the offense with 11 points.
