UNLV beats Nevada 67-62
RENO, Nev. (AP) Christian Wood scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his eleventh double-double of the season Tuesday and UNLV beat Nevada 67-62, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Goodluck Okonoboh scored 13 points off the bench on 6-of-7 shooting and blocked five shots for UNLV (12-9, 3-5 Mountain West Conference) and Rashad Vaughn added 10 points.
Wood's biggest points came late on a 3-pointer giving UNLV a 60-56 lead with 1:39 left. Wood opened the game with four straight points and UNLV led 33-26 at halftime.
Nevada rallied to lead 56-55 with 3:01 left, but Okonoboh hit a layup and Wood hit a 3 amid a 10-2 run and the Rebels pulled away.
Eric Cooper led Nevada with 16 points (6-13, 2-5), A.J. West and Tyron Criswell scored 15 each, with West grabbing 15 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season.
The loss is Nevada's fifth straight since beating UNLV on a go-ahead jumper with 4.8 seconds left on Jan. 10 in Las Vegas.
UNLV outshot Nevada 49 to 36 percent from the field. Both teams struggled to control the ball - each had 13 turnovers - and from the foul line. UNLV was 13 of 25 from the stripe and Nevada shot 17 of 27.
UNLV: UNLV, which had to replace all five starters from a year ago, has used a rotation this season that includes five freshmen, one sophomore and two seniors. ... Freshman guard Rashad Vaughn entered the game leading the team in scoring, averaging 17.9 point per game.
Nevada: The Wolf Pack's best shooter Tuesday Eric Cooper Jr., scored a deep 3 off the backboard ending the first half that kept the Wolf Pack close going into the break. ... A Nevada victory would have given the Wolf Pack only its second four-game win streak in program history against the Rebels, last done in 1993-1996. UNLV has dominated the all-time series, 57-22.
UNLV hosts Air Force on Saturday.
Nevada plays Saturday at Wyoming.
