Prairie View (12-16, 10-5 Southwestern Athletic Conference) chipped away during a sluggish second half, tying at 49 on Tre Hagood's layup with 12 minutes to play. A pair of free throws by A&M's Nicholas West gave the Bulldogs a one-point lead with 3:20 to go.
The Panthers responded with a six-point run to lead 70-65 with 2:11 remaining. Justin Colvin's putback three-point play got it back to one with 29 seconds left, but Prairie View's John Brisco was 4 of 4 from the line, while West and Ladarius Tabb both missed 3-point attempts on the last possession.
Tabb led Alabama A&M (8-17, 7-8) with 18 points and 14 rebounds. West finished with 13 points and 14 boards. The Bulldogs led 43-34 at the break.
