Elon breezes past Charlotte, 86-74

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Dmitri Thompson scored 19 points on 8 of 11 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds to help lead Elon to an 86-74 win over Charlotte in the season opener on Friday night.

Tyler Seibring and Tanner Samson each added 12 points for the Phoenix, who shot 47.8 percent from the field while holding the 49ers to just 36.9 percent.

Elon opened the game on a 10-1 run, capped by a Dainan Swoope 3-pointer assisted by Samson, and never trailed in the game. The Phoenix led 53-26 at the break and pushed their lead as high as 26 in the second half.

Charlotte closed the final 3:26 on a 15-6 run which trimmed the final deficit to 12.

Ridell Camidge scored 18 off the bench to lead the 49ers. Bernard Sullivan added 13 points and eight rebounds.
