No. 3 Oklahoma avoids upset against Hawaii, stays undefeated

Thursday December 24th, 2015

The No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners narrowly avoided an upset against a tough Hawaii team Wednesday night at the Diamond Head Classic, eking out a 84–81 win.

The Sooners remain undefeated and move to 10–0 win after being pushed for 40 minutes by the resilient Rainbow Warriors and senior guard Roderick Bobbitt. Bobbitt got hot, scoring 32 points on 8–11 shooting to spark a strong team effort and nearly shock his heavily-favored opponents. Hawaii shot 45% from the floor and kept pace all the way to the buzzer, trailing by just one at halftime and refusing to go away on their home court.

Things got nervous for the Sooners late in the game. After Oklahoma forward Khadeem Lattin split free throws in the final seconds, Hawaii was afforded a final look at the basket down by three. Stefan Jankovic found Bobbitt around midcourt, but his desperation attempt missed to the left, dropping the Rainbow Warriors to 8–2.

Buddy Hield led Oklahoma with 27 points on 7–16 shooting and added nine rebounds and three assists, continuing a stellar campaign for the senior guard. Lattin, a sophomore, added 17 points and eight rebounds.

Oklahoma opens its Big 12 schedule next, hosting No. 11 Iowa State on Jan. 2.
