Combs breaks tie, sparks N. Texas past Southern Miss 70-54

DENTON, Texas (AP) J-Mychal Reese scored 19 points and Jeremy Combs added 14 with nine rebounds as North Texas opened up the game after halftime to defeat Southern Mississippi 70-54 Thursday night and snap a five-game losing skid.

North Texas fell into a 31-31 tie after halftime when Southern Miss knocked down five unanswered points in 30 seconds, but Combs scored a jumper and a dunk back-to-back thanks to a Carrington Ward steal for a 35-31 lead. The Mean Green (8-14, 3-6 Conference USA) never trailed again.

Ja'Michael Brown added 12 points and Rickey Brice, Jr. 11 for North Texas. With nine rebounds, Combs finished just shy of an eighth-straight double-double.

Raheem Watts led Southern Miss (7-13, 4-5) with 15 points. The Golden Eagles scored just 28 points after halftime, committed 17 turnovers and had six shots blocked - three by Bryce. North Texas scored 31 points off turnovers.
