Southern University knocks off Texas Southern 84-79

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Shawn Prudhomme scored 28 points and Adrian Rodgers 25 to lead Southern University to an 84-79 victory over Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Texas Southern on Thursday night.

Trelun Banks added 11 points and Christopher Hyder had nine assists for Southern (19-11, 11-6), who are in fourth place, a game back of Jackson State, with one game remaining. Southern shot 56 percent.

Chris Thomas scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had nine assists for Texas Southern (16-13, 15-2). Malcolm Riley had five 3-pointers and 21 points, Jose Rodriguez 12 points and Derrick Griffin 13 rebounds for the Tigers, who already clinched the regular-season title with a victory over Alabama State on Monday.

Texas Southern rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to get within three with 21 seconds left but Rodgers hit the front-end of two trips to the line while Thomas missed a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left.
