UAB elevates Rob Ehsan to become men's basketball coach

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) UAB has promoted Robert Ehsan to be its next head men's basketball coach.

The 33-year-old Ehsan has spent the past four seasons as an assistant on the staff of Jerod Haase, who left to take over the Stanford program. He was associate head coach the past two seasons.

Blazers athletic director Mark Ingram announced the hire on Monday. Ehsan will be formally introduced on Tuesday.

Ingram says Ehsan emerged as the clear choice after a nine-day national search and called him an integral part of UAB winning two straight Conference USA titles.

Ehsan spent one season as an assistant at Virginia Tech and six seasons under Gary Williams at Maryland.

The contract still has to be approved by the compensation committee of the University of Alabama System board of trustees
