North Carolina cancels basketball practice so players, coaches can vote

Tuesday November 8th, 2016

The North Carolina Tar Heels aren’t holding practice on Tuesday — Election Day — so that players and coaches can go vote.

Point guard Joel Berry posted encouraging followers to get out and vote, as well, which the team shared.

There’s been some controversy in North Carolina surrounding alleged voter suppression, namely restrictions on early voting, same-day voter registration and stricter ID requirements put in place since 2012. Those provisions were struck down by an appeals court over the summer, but there’s an ongoing debate about how minorities in particular have been affected across the state this election.

One thing the Tar Heels may not have to worry about: the state has traditionally leaned red, so forget Duke blue vs. UNC blue. But then again, this year, the Tar Heel State considered a battleground.
