Barring an injury to the Green Wave's Matt Forte, the national rushing race is all but over. A 37.4-yards-per-game gap now exists between Forte (192.4 ypg) and second-ranked running back Kevin Smith of UCF (155.0 ypg). Forte, a senior, is the only player in Division I who has broken the 1,500-yard mark this season. His latest effort -- a 44-carry, 278-yard performance in a loss to Memphis -- was his fourth straight game with at least 200 yards on the ground.

Should a Big Ten team, even one that's 1-8, really be ranked this low? Well, an examination of the NCAA's defensive category rankings shows that the Gophers are earning it: They're 103rd in rushing defense, 116th in pass efficiency defense, and dead last -- 119th -- in total defense. They're also 111th in scoring defense, 116th in turnover margin, and 115th in sacks ... but you get the picture. Illinois, which boasts the eighth-ranked rushing offense and is rolling into the Metrodome next week, has to be licking its chops.
