Friday August 1st, 2014

Joey Grosso, a former Penn linebacker who had recently joined the Miami Hurricanes as a walk-on, died Wednesday while diving for lobsters in South Florida, the University of Pennsylvania announced.

Grosso's stepfather told WSVN that Grosso ran out of air when he went into the water alone after the rest of his party returned to their charter boat. His body was found floating on the surface around 8:30 a.m.

Grosso, 22, was a native of South Florida.

Grosso was on two Ivy League championship teams at Penn, and played in all 30 of his team's games over his final three seasons. He had intended to enroll at the University of Miami Law school in the fall. According to The Miami Herald, he had been added Miami's roster the day before his death.
