The older half-brother of USF starting quarterback Quinton Flowers was killed in a shooting in Miami on Thursday.
Bradley Holt, 24, was killed after he noticed a car driving erratically in front of his apartment complex, where many children were playing. He yelled something at the car in concern for the children, then was shot and killed by the driver a few minutes later, police said.
Police said Holt was being a "good Samaritan" when he was killed.
Flowers, a true freshman, was named the Bulls' starting quarterback on Tuesday. On Thursday, before Holt was killed, USF published an article on its website detailing the tragedy Flowers has already faced in his life. His father was shot and killed outside their home when he was 7, and his mother died of cancer when he was a junior in high school.
"The thoughts and prayers of everyone in our football program and the USF family are with Quinton and his family as they cope with this senseless tragedy," said head coach Willie Taggart. "Quinton is a special young man who has had to endure far more at his young age than anyone should. We will do everything we can to help see him through this very difficult loss."
