Temple and head football coach Matt Rhule have agreed to a contract extension through 2021, a source told Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel.

Rhule led the Owls to a 6-6 record in 2014, his second season as the team's head coach. In his first season, the team finished 2-10.

Before Temple hired him in December 2012, Rhule spent one year as an assistant offensive line coach with the New York Giants. Rhule previously served in several assistant coaching positions with the Owls, including a three-year stint as the team's offensive coordinator from 2008-10.

Temple opens the 2015 season at home against Penn State.
