Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops said on Monday the program dismissed sophomore offensive lineman Marcelys Jones for a violation of team rules.

“I have some other sad news that you’ll probably hear about. Marcelys Jones, I had to dismiss him from the team for a violation of team rules, and he will no longer be with us,” Stoops told reporters.

Jones transferred from Ohio State this summer out of a desire for more playing time. A former Army All-American who was a part of Ohio State’s 2014 recruiting class, Jones would have been required to sit out the 2015 season with Kentucky due to NCAA transfer rules.

Also on Monday, Stoops named Patrick Towles Kentucky’s starting quarterback. A junior, Towles gets the nod over redshirt freshman Drew Barker.

Kentucky opens the season Sept. 5 by hosting Louisiana-Lafayette.
