Frank Beamer’s last home game did not end as he hoped.

North Carolina defeated Virginia Tech in overtime in a sendoff game for Beamer, who announced his retirement earlier this month. The longtime Hokies coach will step down at the end of the season.

The Hokies gave the No. 17 Tar Heels a run for their money, forcing overtime after Michael Brewer led a late touchdown drive. After the Hokies could muster only a field goal on their first drive of the extra period, the Tar Heels responded with a touchdown pass on third-and-goal from Marquise Williams to Quinshad Davis.

Virginia Tech has one left game against Virginia for a chance to become bowl eligible. The win clinched the ACC Coastal Division for North Carolina, the first division championship in school history.
