JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) A person familiar with the search says Jacksonville University has hired Ian Shields as its football coach.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the school has not announced the hire. The school scheduled a news conference Tuesday ''to address the future of the JU football program.''
Shields resigned Thursday from his head-coaching position at Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, North Carolina. He spent two years at Lenoir-Rhyne, going 16-6 overall and 11-1 in 2014. Shield previously served as associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Army from 2009-13.
Jacksonville athletic director Donnie Horner graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and is a former Army quarterback.
Shields replaces Kerwin Bell, whose contract was not renewed after nine seasons. Bell went 66-35 overall and 50-21 in the Pioneer Football League of the Football Championship Subdivision.
