Utah State's Dave Ungerer expected to join Fresno State coaching staff

Thursday January 28th, 2016

Utah State special teams coordinator and running backs coach Dave Ungerer is expected to be hired in the same positions under Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter, according to a source.

Ungerer has served in his roles at Utah State for the past three seasons after working in the same capacity at Washington State from 2010–11. He was the special teams coordinator at Elon in ’09 following two years in the same role at Oregon State.

The 29-year coach was the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Alabama from 2003–06 and served in the same positions at California in ’02. He was the special teams coordinator at Lehigh from ’00–01, winning the Patriot League championship in both seasons.

Ungerer also coached at Maryland from 1992–96, working as the strength coach for the first two years before becoming the special teams coordinator and running backs coach. He was Holy Cross’s special teams coordinator, running backs coach and strength coach from ’88–91 after three seasons as Davidson’s defensive line coach and strength coach.

Ungerer got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant working with defensive backs at Rutgers from 1983–84 and spent a year coaching the defensive line at Northeastern in ’85. He played running back for Southern Connecticut State from ’77–80.

At Fresno State, he joins DeRuyter’s staff after the Bulldogs went 3–9 in a 2015 season marred by season-ending injuries to two quarterbacks who started games. This season was only the first time Fresno State has not at least won a share of the Mountain West title or played in the league’s championship game during the highly respected DeRuyter’s tenure. He has a 29–23 record in his four seasons with the Bulldogs.
