Alabama A&M defensive back Danny Johnson died Thursday after being involved in a car crash.

Alabama A&M defensive back Danny Johnson died Thursday after being involved in a car crash, the school announced.

"This is a tragic loss for the Alabama A&M University family," said Director of Athletics Bryan Hicks. "Danny was a fine young man, a hard worker on the field and off.”

According to Alabama State Troopers, Johnson was the passenger in a car that collided head-on with a passing truck. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The drivers of the vehicles sustained injuries an were taken to an area hospital.

The accident took place in the Jackson County area of Alabama.

Johnson, 20, was finishing his sophomore year at Alabama A&M. He was a two-year starter on the football team, finishing second on the team with 30 solo tackles last season.
