North Alabama moving up to FCS level, joining ASUN

FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) North Alabama is moving up to Division I and joining the ASUN Conference.

The Division II school and the league announced the move on Tuesday after a unanimous vote by the ASUN Presidents Council. The Lions will remain in the Gulf South Conference through the 2017-18 academic year.

North Alabama, long a Division II power, will play football in the Big South Conference starting in 2018 and compete in the ASUN in each of its other sports. UNA will be an FCS independent in 2018.

Alabama schools Samford, Jacksonville State and Troy are former ASUN members. Troy competes at the FBS level now and the others in FCS.

North Alabama has won three Division II titles in football and visits Shepherd University in the semifinals on Saturday.
