WACO, Texas (AP) Baylor is making a change at quarterback after losing its first two games.
New coach Matt Rhule said sophomore Zach Smith will start Saturday at Duke. Anu Solomon, a graduate transfer from Arizona, started against Liberty and UTSA.
''It was a tough, tough tight race in camp,'' Rhule said Monday. ''So after two games ... Zach, I think he's more ready to play.''
Smith was Baylor's starter as a true freshman the final four games of last season, including a win in the Cactus Bowl. Smith took over after Seth Russell's season-ending ankle injury.
Solomon threw for 278 and threw touchdowns, and also ran for 97 yards in the season-opening loss to Liberty. But he was 10-of-26 passing for 121 yards and had only 9 yards rushing on 10 carries in the second game.
When Smith had to enter for one play against UTSA, he had a 16-yard completion. He also played only one play in the opener.
''I think the biggest thing I like about Zach is the fact that he had to sit down and watch Anu play, and he had a tremendous attitude about it,'' Rhule said. ''He's a competitor. The last win these kids had, he led them to it. He's healthy now. I think that ankle is 100 percent, he's moving around well, and we're going to turn to him and let him go do his thing.''
Baylor had only 274 total yards against UTSA, which like Liberty had never before beaten a team from a Power Five conference. The Bears are 0-2 for the first time since 2003.
Asked after the UTSA game what he could have done better, Solomon responded, ''Everything. To my reads, to my throws downfield. I wasn't connecting.''
