Friday Night Bites: Hawaii at BYU (FAQ)
Hawaii and BYU play a single game tonight that makes up the entirety of your Friday college football viewing schedule. We’re sure you have so many questions.
• What information do I, the discerning consumer, need to consume this game? The Cougars and Warriors are scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. ET in Provo, Utah. The game will be televised on ESPN and streamed on WatchESPN.
• Why am I spending my Friday night watching two teams with a combined record of 3-4 play football? Why did George Mallory dream of scaling Mount Everest?
• What have we seen out of these teams so far this season? Precious little that's encouraging. Hawaii bracketed a 54-2 victory over the Lamar Cardinals in Week 3 with a 49-10 loss to USC and a 69-24 loss to Nevada. Those opponents are teams to be held in some regard, to be sure, but it's hard to like the Warriors' chances tonight, particularly when pitting their pitiful offense against BYU's top-10 defense.
The Cougars started hot with a 30-6 opening week win over a Washington State team whose badness we did not yet comprehend. In the past two weeks, however, BYU has lost on missed field goals to a Utah team playing without its veteran starting quarterback and participated in one of the most offensively depressing contests thus far this season, last week's 7-6 loss at Boise State. But we suspect that they will be able to handle the Warriors with some ease, and maybe even score some offensive touchdowns, regardless of whether it's Riley Nelson or Taysom Hill playing quarterback. This is, after all, the Hawaii defense. The Warriors allowed Stefphon Jefferson to score seven times last week. • ... so, for real, why are we watching? Because we almost turned off Stanford-Washington in disgust at halftime last night. Because maybe some JoeTess magic still lingers in the Friday night ether, enough to provide us with a football game. Because you know Utah's student section isn't above traveling to Provo just to rush the field again. (This is an attainable dream! They're on a bye week!) Because it's there.
