It was a week filled with historic spreads and stats, with (possible) running clocks and 12-minute quarters. And we haven't yet hit the crest of college football madness. Whether this is the calm before the storm or ranked teams settling into their spots, the AP Poll after Week 4 didn't see a whole lot of movers and shakers.
Oregon received four first-place votes this week over the single vote the Ducks got last week. Alabama was shaky against Colorado State, which may have earned Oregon those few extra votes.
Michigan continued to plummet, falling from No. 15 to No. 18, while Baylor (No. 19) and Florida (No. 20) swapped spots. The top 10 stayed exactly the same. Fresno State entered the top 25 after a Friday win over Boise State, and the Bulldogs are one of just three non-AQ teams (along with Northern Illinois and Navy) still undefeated. Arizona State dropped out of the poll with a 42-28 loss to Stanford.
The full list is below, with first-place votes in parentheses:
1) Alabama (56)
2) Oregon (4)
4) Ohio State
8) Florida State
10) Texas A&M
11) Oklahoma State
12) South Carolina
21) Ole Miss
22) Notre Dame
24) Texas Tech
25) Fresno State
Three quick thoughts from the poll:
- Michigan escaped for the second straight week, but this is why rankings in the early season are flawed. If we ranked based on just the results of the first four weeks, the Wolverines wouldn't be on many ballots. Their best win, Notre Dame, has some shine off of it, and after back-to-back weeks with less than impressive showings over Akron and UConn, Michigan certainly doesn't look like a ranked team right now.
- It's not a gauntlet, but Baylor has scored 60+ points in its first three games and has really impressed. While the No. 19 ranking is probably justified until we see the Bears beat some better opponents, they could be on the rise.
- Favorites dominated (and mostly covered) in Week 4, so we didn't see a lot of movement overall. It wouldn't be a very exciting football season if things stayed status quo, and history tells us the craziness is coming in the next week or two. The only question who is going to fall?
