Florida State debuts at No. 2 in first BCS standings; Alabama No. 1
One day after its 51-14 blowout win at Clemson, Florida State debuted at No. 2 in the first BCS standings unveiled on Sunday night.
The Seminoles opened just below Alabama, which holds the top BCS spot. Oregon, Ohio State and Missouri rounded out the top five.
The percentage of votes in the USA Today and Harris polls each count for one third of the BCS calculations, with a combination of six computer rankings making up the final third. Each team's highest and lowest computer rankings are thrown out in the formula.
Here's a look at the complete BCS standings:
2. Florida State
4. Ohio State
10. Texas Tech
14. Virginia Tech
16. Texas A&M
17. Fresno State
18. Northern Illinois
19. Oklahoma State
21. South Carolina
25. Oregon State
A few thoughts:
• Florida State beat out Oregon for the BCS No. 2 ranking even though the Ducks landed ahead of the Seminoles in both human polls. But FSU had the best overall computer ranking, and that was enough to give the 'Noles their highest spot in the BCS since 2000. In all the ACC had a good showing in the first BCS rankings, with four teams -- Miami (No. 7), Clemson (9) and Virginia Tech (14) -- opening in the top 15.
• Despite its unbeaten record, No. 4 Ohio State wouldn't play for the BCS if the season ended today. The Buckeyes are one of only three Big Ten teams in the released rankings, with No. 22 Michigan and No. 24 Nebraska rounding out the conference's representation. The SEC led all conferences with six schools in the top 25.
• Fresno State (No. 17) and Northern Illinois (No. 18) carried the non-AQ flag in the initial rankings. As non-automatic qualifiers, the Bulldogs or the Huskies would have to finish 12th or higher to earn a BCS bowl berth. One of the two programs could also finish 16th or higher if it finishes ahead of an AQ conference champion. That scenario isn't impossible as Louisville of the American Athletic Conference started off at No. 20 in the rankings. Of course, Northern Illinois crashed last year's BCS by snagging a berth in the Orange Bowl opposite Florida State.Crimson According to Jon Solomon of the Birmingham News
