Penn State coach James Franklin to attend State of the Union

Penn State (Nabil K. Mark/Centre Daily Times/MCT) It seems unlikely that James Franklin will find any elite speed on Capitol Hill. (Nabil K. Mark/Centre Daily Times/MCT)

New Penn State coach James Franklin is taking recruiting to another level. Franklin will attend the State of the Union in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday night as a guest of U.S. Representative Glenn "GT" Thompson, presumably to recruit President Barack Obama's future son for the Nittany Lions. Franklin evidently didn't get the memo that Obama wouldn't let his son play football, so this could get awkward.

Perhaps the trip won't be a total waste, however, as Obama is expected to address college football's targeting rule in his speech. A joke or two at the expense of the BCS would probably earn Obama a bump in his approval rating.
