Malik McDowell, five-star 2014 defensive end, finally signs with Michigan State

Wednesday April 2nd, 2014

Highly touted defensive end Malik McDowell has finally signed with Michigan State. The prep star made the announcement himself on Twitter on Wednesday morning. Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio confirmed the signing.

According to McDowell's account, the 6-foot-6, 292-pounder from Southfield, Mich., signed and faxed his National Letter of Intent to East Lansing late on Tuesday night.

In February, McDowell, the second-rated strongside defensive end in the country, according to, had one of the more dramatic National Signing Day sagas. He committed to Michigan State, but his parents publicly discouraged him from signing.

“We don’t want him at MSU,” Malik’s mother, Joya Crowe, said Monday night, and she gave multiple reasons.

“Something happened, I don’t want to put it out there what it was,” she said of her son’s recent official visit, “but I had a bad experience at MSU.”

Now the drama appears to be over, and Dantonio has secured the state of Michigan's top-ranked prospect in the class of 2014. McDowell chose the Spartans over Michigan, Ohio State and Florida State.
