Antoine Davis Falls Just Shy of Maravich’s NCAA Career Scoring Mark

Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis fell just short of the mark in the Titans’ 71-66 loss to host Youngstown State on Thursday in the second round of the Horizon League tournament.
Davis fell three points shy of tying the record of 3,667, set by the LSU legend in 1970. Davis entered Thursday’s game with 3,642 career points, needing 26 points to pass Maravich.
Davis scored 22 points on 7-of-25 shooting Thursday night. He was 4-of-16 on three-pointers and 4-of-4 on free throws.
Davis, a fifth-year senior who entered Thursday’s game leading the nation with 28.4 points per game, has topped the 40-point mark four times this season. His career high is 48 points, recorded on Jan. 3, 2019, against Wright State during his freshman season.
Maravich played at LSU from 1967 to ’70 at a time when there was no three-point shot and freshmen were not permitted to play on the varsity team due to NCAA rules. He led the nation in scoring in each of his three varsity seasons. Maravich went on to enjoy a brilliant NBA career with the Hawks, Jazz and Celtics, ultimately earning induction in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. He died as the result of an undetected heart defect in ’88.
Davis is the son of Detroit Mercy coach Mike Davis, who previously coached at Indiana, UAB and Texas Southern.
