Alabama soccer fails to break down No. 23 Virginia Tech
The Alabama soccer team took a 2-0 loss ti No. 23 Virginia Tech in a non-conference match played in Blacksburg, Va.
Despite a fast start offensively from Alabama, when it put four of its six early shots on goal, Virginia tech capitalized on a quick counterattack from Nicole Kozlova to take the lead in the 36th minute.
The Hokies doubled their advantage in the 55th minute through Emmalee McCarter. Sophomore forward Riley Mattingly had her chance to draw one back for the Crimson Tide in the 78 minute but sent her penalty kick wide right of the post.
Alabama dominated in terms of possession, keeping the Hokies pinned into their own half for 59 percent of the match. It also outshot Virginia Tech 14-7 and topped the Hokies 10-2 on corners, yet the Crimson Tide was shut out for the second time this season.
“We won a lot of stats tonight, but not the ones that matter,” Alabama coach Wes Hart said. “I am proud of the fight as well of the quality of soccer, but we need to find a way to win these games if we want to take the next step with this program.”
The Crimson Tide will continue its road trip, visiting Chattanooga on Sunday.
