Countdown to the Crimson Tide’s 2019 opener

1 day

Did you notice?

• Derrick Henry from 50 yards (and yes, he was trying to do this …)

• The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game announced the honorary captains for Saturday’s game at in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Current New York Jets wide receiver Jamison Crowder will represent Duke, while Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley will be likewise for Alabama.

• Former Alabama player (and current Clemson coach) Dabo Swinney will have his high school jersey retired during a halftime ceremony Friday. Pelham will host Bibb County at Ned Bearden Stadium.

• Former Crimson Tide golfer Lauren Stephenson was tied for fifth after the first round of the LPGA Portland Open.

• Nick Saban had an interesting comment on the Dan Patrick Show after the host asked what would happen if a player parked in his spot, and then what if it was Tua Tagovailoa? “Sometimes when key players on your team do things, even though you really have a great relationship with them and it’s kind of not a big deal, you also have to realize that — especially when the key players do something — that everybody else on the team is watching. So, how you manage that circumstance, regardless of what it is, is really important to how they decide to do things in the future.”

• AJ McCarron, who had a cast on his right hand after hitting it on a helmet during a training camp practice with the Packers, was back in uniform and threw pregame warmups prior to the Texans’ final preseason game against the Rams.

• Men’s basketball coach Nate Oats made an appearance on “Hey Coach” and confirmed that everyone on the roster is on campus and enrolled. The only player not practicing is guard James "Beetle" Bolden (shoulder), while forward/center Raymond Hawkins is still getting into shape to play in their system. “Somebody said it’s the third toughest in the country,” Oats said about Alabama’s non-conference schedule that was recently announced.  “If we do what we’re supposed to do and win our share of those games we should be in the NCAA tournament.”

• Former Alabama tennis player Alexa Guarachi and Bernarda Pera won their first-round women’s doubles match at the U.S. Open. They defeated the Japanese team of Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.
