• Senior Ginger Perinar had nine kills, while freshman Alyiah Wells made five blocks and Alabama volleyball notched nine aces in its season opener against Marist at the Buffalo Invitational. The nightcap against the host school, the Crimson Tide won six straight points to win the second set 25-23, and was down in the third set as well before completing the sweep. Junior Doris Carter had nine kills while junior Kaylee Thomas led the team in digs with 16. “Preseason tournaments are opportunities to form your identity,” Crimson Tide coach Lindsey Devine said in a release. “Today, we were a team that showed resiliency. We had to come back multiple times today in a tough road environment. It’s not easy when you dig yourself a hole but I’m proud of the way we played in the present, stayed together and played as a team.”
• Active Alabama adapted athletes Rosalie Lalonde and Arinn Young, and alumni Maude Jacques and Cindy Ouelett were on the Canadian gold-medal winning team at the Para Pan Am Games.

• We mentioned on Friday that former Alabama women’s tennis player Alexa Guarachi and Bernada Bera defeated Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya of Japan in the first round of the U.S. Open in women’s doubles. It turns out the win was the first for a Crimson Tide alum in a grand slam match.

August 31, 1964: Joe Namath was the center of attention during Alabama’s picture day. The 5,000 media booklets printed by the athletic department were almost sold out, and writers from around the South were picking Alabama, LSU and Auburn to battle reigning champion Ole Miss for the league title. A picture of Paul Bryant and Namath conversing on the bench was the featured photo on the media book cover. – Bryant Museum
