Did you notice?

• Alabama senior Gilbert Kigen took second place in the 10,000 on day one of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Mike A. Meyers Stadium on the University of Texas campus. "It was a gutsy performance for sure," Crimson Tide coach Dan Waters said in a release. With one lap to go, Kigan took off from the field, bolting to the front and going stride-for-stride with eventual champion Clayton Young from BYU to the finish.

• Jimmy Nelson made his first appearance in 21 months, but lasted just three innings and gave up a grand slam on his birthday. On the great-news side his twin daughters went home from hospital after premature births.

• With the 2019 MLB Draft over ...

• Fifth-year coach Wes Hart announced the 2019 soccer schedule, with 12 of the 19 opponents having played in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Alabama will open play at home on August 17, against South Alabama and close the regular season at home against defending SEC champion Vanderbilt on October 31.

On this date in Crimson Tide history:

June 6, 1929: The University Athletic Committee named the new football arena in Tuscaloosa “The George Hutcheson Denny Stadium.” The resolution was introduced by Committee member Hugo Friedman, who said the stadium will seat 12,350 fans. Money for erecting the stadium came from funds earned by Alabama's two appearances in the Rose Bowl. Denny said one day the stadium will seat as many as 60,000 spectators. Such a futuristic outlook is not plausible according to media pundits.— Bryant Museum
