Arizona basketball assistant goes to Marquette

Brad Allis

Arizona basketball assistant coach Justin Gainey will join the staff at Marquette as the program's associate head coach. Gainey had previously been on the staff at MU as director of operations.

"Justin Gainey is an excellent basketball coach and an even better person," said Sean Miller in a statement.

Miller went on to say that Gainey did an "excellent job" in his two years in Tucson and that he will be missed.

No word on what direction Arizona will go in an attempt to fill the position.

This next hire will be interesting. Miller had almost no say in the hiring of Murph and Murph is the only coach without Pack Line experience. Gainey played for Thad Matta, so he was well steeped in it.

OH, I'm sorry. For those of you who still support Miller, let me put it in language you can understand:

"Fucking Gainey is a mother fucking pack line bitch to the core and Miller did not give a shit who was hired when Murph was hired, he can promote a fucking mother fucking trainer - he doesn't give a fuck.

So, is it safe to say that you're not a fan of the pack line defense?

To me the problem is not the packline, the problem is the offense. Specifically, the long scoring droughts and the late game struggles. In a perfect world they would add a veteran coach Miller could use as a sounding board and can be a calming influence on the players. Sort of like Romar, but a good coach.

Brad - defense leads to offense. It is very difficult to run out of the pack line which puts lots of pressure on 1/2 court shooting %. Defense leads to offense. I agree that pack line in and of itself is not a bad defense - however it obviates any advantage in height, speed and talent - which is what it is designed to do. But we don't have that problem. If we could play some M2M in this era, and open it up more for our athletes to run, I think we would have better results.

But Miller has to decide - is he going to have team of Stone Gettings and play Pack line and never get to the sweet 16 again or a team of Zeke Nnaji's and run and maybe get back to the final four. But they are not interchangeable and the very worst he can do is give them conflicting messages and pretend that they are.
