Bowl Eligibility

A.J. Black

According to Brett McMurphy of The Stadium, the NCAA approved today that all 127 D1 schools are bowl eligible. There are only 78 bowl spots. He didn't say anything about teams jumping other teams with better records, but as a Boston College writer I'd be worried about a 4-7 school like FSU jumping a 7-4 BC squad for a better bowl.

There is going to be few if any fans willing or able to travel to these games. If that is the case, I would hope that bowls would aim to produce the best matchup in their game rather than simply inviting an also ran "big name." Having said that, I would assume that teams are likely going to primarily stay local for their bowls. The Fenway Bowl has BC-Temple written all over it.

Did you really write that "there are only 78 bowl spots?" That seems like plenty.

Part of me hopes they do things by win percentage to equate leagues like the ACC and B10. But most of me fears having teams like FSU jump ahead as people try and recoup more money by having bigger names play.
