Eagles Who Could #Soar In 2019: WR Zay Flowers

A.J. Black

Earlier this summer BC Maven started a semi-regular video series entitled Eagles Who Could Soar In 2019. So far we have covered cornerback Brandon Sebastian, tight end Hunter Long and offensive tackle Ben Petrula, wide receiver Kobay White, running back Travis Levy , defensive tackle Tanner Karafa, linebacker Isaiah McDuffie and wide receiver/running back Ben Glines. Today we are going to talk about Zay Flowers, a true freshman who could immediately see the field and become a factor on a turned over Boston College wide receiving crew and special teams unit.

Zay Flowers, a 5'11 3* 2019 wide receiver out of Fort Lauderdale Florida chose Boston College with a serious number of claimed offers including Nebraska, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Purdue, Pittsburgh, NC State, Kentucky and Kansas State amongst many other mid level schools. During his senior season he had 38 receptions for 652 yards and 8 touchdowns which was actually down from the 10 touchdowns he had as a junior WR.

Talking to wide receiver coach Richie Gunnell this week he talked to me about Flowers making plays this spring. With the turnover at WR, losing Jeff Smith and Michael Walker, there are going to be some slots open for younger players to rise. Noah Jordan Williams, and CJ Lewis both could be in line for bigger roles, but Gunnell mentioned that Flowers could be set to fill Smith's role. He has the speed and versatility, and if coaches are noticing, could he be in for some major minutes?

The other role I've heard Flowers linked to, is at punt and kick returner. As mentioned before Walker has graduated, which might mean Ben Glines could become a returner, or Flowers could step up to that role. Coaches have talked about Zay grabbing this role at some point this season. From everything I've heard, it sounds like Flowers is an athletic playmaker that BC is going to do everything they can to make sure he sees the field in some capacity in 2019.
