Cal Basketball Video: Mark Fox -- "We Have to Establish a Defensive Mentality"

New Cal head coach hints at the style he will employ, and it doesn't look like it will be fast-break basketball

Mark Fox was officially introduced as Cal new head basketball coach on Monday, and although he was not specific about the style he would employ with the Bears, he offered a hint in this video of what to expect.

"We have to establish a defensive mentality that makes us hard to play against us," Fox said, "and we have some work to do there."

Indeed, Cal ranked 348th of 351 Division I school in field-goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot 48.9 percent from the floor.

In Fox's final season at Georgia, the Bulldogs ranked seventh in the country in field-goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 39.4 percent from the field. But Georgia ranked 301st of 351 Division I schools in scoring that year, averaging 68.1 points.

His offense at Cal?

Well, it's a little difficult to determine from what he said, but it appears the Bears won't be running up and down the floor at break-neck speed.

"Offensively we want to play as fast as we can play well, but what is most important is that we become as efficient as possible," he said.

It remains to be seen the specific offensive and defensive schemes Fox will use at Cal and whether that will change when he gets his own recruits in the program.
